The world

The province map

A world (a "shard" of the broken empire) is divided into continents, each continent into provinces, and each province into sites. A default world has 4 continents of 499 provinces.

Coordinates

Every place is written continent:province:site, for example 2:41:8. Coordinates typed in the chat become links to the map.

  • Sites 1 to 15 run from the sun-scorched south (site 1) to the frozen north (site 15). Each can hold one stronghold, and a stronghold may have a Skyhold floating above it.
  • Site 16 is the Wilds, unmapped land beyond the province. It cannot be settled; hosts go there on quests, and the spoils of Wayfarers' quest battles lie there.

Lands and sites

Each site belongs to one of five lands. A site decides how many plots a new hold gets, how hot it is, and which resource it yields more of. The highest temperature matters for the Aether Condenser (colder is better) and for Sun Prisms (hotter is better).

Site Land Plots Highest temperature Yield bonus Cartography to settle
1 Sunscar 96–172 220 to 260 °C +40% runestone 8
2 Sunscar 104–176 170 to 210 °C +30% runestone 6
3 Sunscar 112–182 120 to 160 °C +20% runestone 4
4 Dry marches 118–208 70 to 110 °C — 1
5 Dry marches 133–232 60 to 100 °C — 1
6 Heartlands 146–242 50 to 90 °C +17% iron 1
7 Heartlands 152–248 40 to 80 °C +23% iron 1
8 Heartlands 156–252 30 to 70 °C +35% iron 1
9 Heartlands 150–246 20 to 60 °C +23% iron 1
10 Heartlands 142–232 10 to 50 °C +17% iron 1
11 Highlands 136–210 0 to 40 °C — 1
12 Highlands 125–186 −10 to 30 °C — 1
13 Frostmarch 114–172 −50 to −10 °C — 4
14 Frostmarch 100–168 −90 to −50 °C — 6
15 Frostmarch 90–164 −130 to −90 °C — 8
16 The Wilds — — Quests and spoils only; cannot be settled —

When a hold is settled, its plots and highest temperature are rolled within the site's range. Your Seat always has 163 plots. A Wayfarer settles with 10% more plots, and the Circle of Sages adds another 5%.

Holds and Cartography

Cartography decides which sites you may settle, how many strongholds you may hold, and how many quest slots and quest hours you have.

  • Strongholds held = 1 + ⌈Cartography ÷ 2⌉ (Skyholds do not count).
  • Quest slots = ⌊√Cartography⌋, plus 1 with the Marshal and 2 for a Wayfarer.
  • A quest may camp in the Wilds for 1 hour up to as many hours as your Cartography level.

Distance

Distances are measured in leagues:

Between Distance
Two places on the same site 5
Two sites of the same province 1,000 + 5 × the difference in sites
Two provinces of the same continent 2,700 + 95 × the difference in provinces
Two continents 20,000 × the difference in continents

In a round world (the default) the map wraps: province 499 is next to province 1, and the last continent is next to the first. A world can also be set to ignore empty provinces, which skips the provinces between the two ends that hold no active lord.

The distance sets a host's march time and aether.

New lords

A new lord's Seat is placed on a free site between 4 and 12 in the first province (walking continent 1 from province 1) that has fewer than seven strongholds. Neighbours are therefore other new lords.
